North Lanarkshire Economy
North Lanarkshire is the fourth largest local authority area in Scotland by population. It is also an area that is experiencing population growth. North Lanarkshire has seen consistent population growth for the last decade.
The growth rate of businesses has also been evident with the number of businesses growing year-on-year in the area since 2004.
Notwithstanding the issue of North Lanarkshire's economy being traditionally reliant on declining industries such as coal, heavy industry and manufacturing, economic output in North Lanarkshire has continually out-performed the Scottish average since the mid-1990's.
North Lanarkshire benefits from being at the heart of the major motorway networks in Scotland with Glasgow and Edinburgh both in close proximity as well as having access to the main centres of population in the North East of Scotland and to England. North Lanarkshire is established as a key centre for distribution centres and many blue chip clients such as Next, Morrisons and News International have chosen to have major distribution centres here.
